Empowering women is a critical pathway to resilient and thriving communities. One of the ways we are making this a reality is through sustainable beekeeping, which is transforming the lives of women small-scale farmers across our project communities.
Why Beekeeping?
Beekeeping is a low-cost, high-impact livelihood opportunity that fits seamlessly into women’s existing agricultural activities. It requires minimal land, does not compete with food production, and enhances crop yields through pollination. Most importantly, beekeeping offers women a stable source of income, helping them to support their families, invest in their children’s education, and contribute to household decision-making.
Our Impact So Far
Through our Gender Transformative Change for Women Sustainable Livelihood Project, VAO has already trained 30 women in sustainable beekeeping. These women have received practical training on hive management, honey harvesting, and processing, alongside business development and financial literacy to help them manage their income effectively.
The results are inspiring. Women who previously struggled to generate consistent income now proudly harvest and sell honey and beeswax products, gaining confidence and financial independence while playing a crucial role in environmental conservation.
Scaling to Reach More Women
Building on this success, we are now scaling the project to reach an additional 80 women small-scale farmers across rural communities. This expansion will include:
✅ Providing women with modern hives, protective gear, and essential tools.
✅ Training in advanced beekeeping and small-scale enterprise management.
✅ Linking women to reliable local and external markets for honey and beeswax products.
✅ Engaging communities in discussions to challenge barriers that limit women’s participation in economic activities.
Join Us in Creating Lasting Change
We believe that by scaling sustainable beekeeping, we can transform rural economies, promote gender equality, and protect the environment. But we cannot do it alone.
VAO is seeking partners, donors, and technical supporters who share our vision of sustainable development and women’s economic empowerment. Together, we can expand the reach of this initiative and create opportunities for women to thrive while contributing to a healthier planet.
